Tony Lee Smith, the suspect in the attack on Gloria Lucas and Debra McCollum was arrested yesterday (Thursday, March 15, 2018) at approximately 6PM. Smith was located at a residence in Simpson County, roughly 5 miles from Magee. Smith was taken into custody without incident. Smith was booked into the Magee City Jail and held there.

Today, Tony Lee Smith was interviewed by investigators. Smith also appeared before the Honorable Judge Eugene Knight for an Initial Appearance and a Bond Hearing. Bond was denied for Smith on this case by Judge Eugene Knight after hearing considerations from District Attorney Matt Sullivan of the 13th Judicial District. During this hearing, Smith also waived his right to a Preliminary Hearing, which bound the case over to the Grand Jury. This also allowed Smith to be transferred to the Simpson County Jail for housing.

The Magee Police Department would like to extend our most sincere thanks to the many agencies that have, and are continuing to help, with this case. These agencies are (but not limited to): the Simpson County Sheriff’s Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Hinds County Sheriff’s Department, Rankin County Sheriff’s Department, the Mississippi Law Enforcement FUSION Center, Richland Police Department, and the Simpson County District Attorney’s Office. This case is a prime example of how quickly things can happen when law enforcement agencies have a good working relationship and coordinate with each other.

Chief Randy Crawford of the Magee Police Department stated: “I want to thank all the departments and officers/deputies/agents/troopers who have been a tremendous help to our agency during this case thus far. I would also like to tell everyone to please remember these victims and their families during this time. Please keep them in your prayers and thoughts.”
