From seedlings to colossal crops, the Magee Elementary School Garden yielded a grand harvest during its second year of existence.
Maintained by students and staff of Magee Elementary School, student participants in kindergarten through second grade were provided an opportunity to get their hands dirty while planting a variety of vegetables such as cabbages, broccoli, collard greens and potatoes.
Teacher and garden founder Carol Marshall said that she and her students were immensely proud of how well the garden did this year compared to their modest beginning last year.
“It’s not where it could be, but it’s growing on us,” said Marshall. “We’re better this year than we were last year. We’re better last year than we were the year before because the year before, it was a little of nothing.”
Once the vegetables were ready for harvesting, Marshall and students presented staff and administrators, who supported their efforts, with crops from their troughs.
“This year, everything did what it was supposed to do, and I’m very happy about that,” said Marshall. “The students have been very excited about the garden. They just love it.”
Started in 2021, the Magee Elementary School Garden originated as an effort to expose students to the stages of plant growth while enhancing their knowledge and vocabulary.
