The Mayor’s Youth Council was introduced Tuesday, March 3, 2020 during the regular board meeting. The Mayor’s Youth Council consist of students from Magee and Simpson County Academy chosen by their counselors. The group attends monthly meetings and compete community service projects.
Mayor Dale Berry advised all lights on Hwy 49 have been replaced by Entergy. Southern Pine is replacing the lights that belong to them on the north end of Hwy 49. A new project is under way with the city. The city is allowed inmates on Fridays. Starting shortly, each alderman will pick a street each week for the inmates to clean and remove trash. Hopefully this will help to make Magee an appealing city.
Concerns have been made to the city regarding dogs on leash. According to law, if a dog is on a leash but food, water and shelter are being provided nothing can be done.
Mayor Berry announced on April 18th, a group will be at the Civic Center discussing Burheads to Trojans – History of Magee Football at 2 p.m. The public is invited to stop by and share stories.
Berry reminded the public about the cemetery workday that is scheduled for April 10th. The Mayor’s Youth Council has volunteered to assist on this day.
Again, the mayor can not stress the importance of the 2020 Census and asks that everyone make sure they are counted. The Census count begins March 12, 2020.
The board approved advertising bids for the paving project scheduled for Memorial Day weekend. The board approved purchasing a new Grapple Truck at a cost of $156,000.
The softball and baseball city league teams will be selecting individual teams this week. Games and league play will start shortly.
The fire department met before the board to discuss Project “Sound Dog”. The program teaches students the different sounds smoke detectors make. The idea is to educate 3rd students of the safety concerning smoke detectors. Magee will focus on one third grade class this year. Next year an additional class is will be added and by the third year hopefully all third grades will be able to participate in the program. The reason for only one grade this year is funding in purchasing the smoke detectors. Phillip Magee brought to the boards attention that Michael Allen had completed and graduated from the Fire Academy.
The fire department has batteries available for smoke detectors for their servicing area. Anyone can stop by the fire house and pick up the batteries. Some form of residence is requested to receive the batteries. The reason residency requirements are required is all fire departments received batteries and only enough batteries were provided to service their responding area.
With no further business meeting was recessed to go into executive session to discuss personnel matters.
