JACKSON, Miss. – For the seventh year, the Office of State Treasurer Lynn Fitch and Mississippi Children’s Museum (MCM) will be celebrating September as National College Savings Month by partnering on Saturday, September 7th to promote strategic ways children and families can save for educational expenses.

All day on September 7, 2019, admission to the MCM for all guests will be only $5.29. Staff from both the College Savings Mississippi at the State Treasurer’s Office and MCM will be at the museum leading financial literacy activities and helping children build their own savings banks.  College Savings Specialists will also share information with parents and grandparents about signing up for one or both of Mississippi’s 529 college savings plans – MACS (Mississippi Affordable College Savings) and MPACT (Mississippi Prepaid Affordable College Tuition). College Savings Mississippi will host two drawings to win a $529 MACS scholarship, as well.

MCM President Susan Garrard notes, “MCM is very excited about our partnership with the State Treasurer’s office in the important work of preparing families and children for college tuition costs. Everything we do at MCM is centered around creating and advocating for opportunities for Mississippi children. We know how critical access to higher education is in determining life trajectories for our students, and we appreciate the Treasurer’s office for recognizing us as a principal partner in this important effort. MCM is looking forward to another great 529 Day!”

“By the time your child is in the third grade, they’re halfway to college,” stated Treasurer Fitch.  “It’s really never too early, or too late, to start saving.  We are so grateful for the partnership between College Savings Mississippi and the Mississippi Children’s Museum, which each September hosts our annual $5.29 College Savings Day to help promote college savings to young families.  We invite everyone to come by the Museum on Saturday, September 7th to enjoy fun financial literacy activities, take pictures with Echo, and register for a chance to win one of two $529 MACS scholarships we will be giving away.”

A 529 plan, named for its section of the federal tax code, is an educational savings plan operated by a state or educational institution designed to help families prepare and save for future education costs. Both Mississippi plans, MACS and MPACT offer federal and state tax advantages to help stretch your savings dollar.

MPACT is a prepaid tuition plan that prepays the cost of tuition and mandatory fees, protecting against the future rise in college tuition. MACS helps Mississippi families save for future college expenses such as tuition, books, laptops, supplies, and certain room and board expenses.  MACS can also be used for up to $10,000 per year for elementary and secondary tuition expenses at private, religious, and public schools.
