Luther Dennis (L.D.) McCallum passed away on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at the age of 91. He was born November 10, 1929, to Walter Scott McCallum and Alice (Hopkins) McCallum in Smith County.
L.D. was a hard worker from an early age. He worked for MP&L-Entergy for twenty-five years and was a poultry grower for McCarty Farms-Tyson for forty years. He was one of the founding fathers of Simpson County Academy and helped install the first lighting system on Cougar field. L.D. and Doris are what helped make Simpson County Academy what it is today.
He enjoyed raising cattle, loved to garden, camp, and ride motorcycles with his friends, but most of all was the love he had for his family. He and his wife Doris would have soon celebrated their seventy-fourth wedding anniversary.
Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife, Doris (Martin) McCallum; children, Janie Ainsworth (Ronnie), Denise Welch ( David), Dennis McCallum (Michele), Patti McCallum; grandsons, Donny Welch (Stephanie), Owen McCallum, Seth McCallum, Ron Ainsworth (Brooke); granddaughters, Christy (Ainsworth) Hipp, DeAnna (Welch) Womack (Steve); great-grandsons, Kyle Walker, Koby Walker, Ryan Welch, Riley Welch, Christian Womack, Parker Hipp, Garrett Hipp; great-granddaughters, Marlee Welch, Anna Claire Walker, Kynlee Womack, Kaydee Womack and Grayson Hipp.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Travis McCallum, Walter McCallum; sisters, Ola Grace Jones and Billie Rose Jones.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at Tutor Funeral Home in Magee on Saturday, September 11, 2021, from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Graveside services will follow at Goodwater Baptist Church in Magee at 12:30 p.m. with Bro. Jason Webb officiating.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, two sons-in-law and grandson-in-law. Honorary pallbearers will be his great-grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Goodwater Church Cemetery, 1313 Goodwater Road NW, Magee, MS 39111 or St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
Arrangements are entrusted with Tutor Funeral Home of Magee.
