The “Street Talk” is that Love’s Truck Stop has signed a real estate deal to purchase property on the south side of Tractor Supply! Oh my, now we will have big trucks and buses…just saying.
Love’s website gave the following information about the company: Who We Are
Clean Places, Friendly Faces. It’s been a guiding principle at Love’s for more than 50 years, and it’s leading us into the future. We’re passionate about serving drivers with clean, modern facilities stocked with plenty of fuel, food and supplies.
Love’s has two primary kinds of stores. Our ‘Country Stores’ are fueling stations with a convenience store attached. The larger Love’s Travel Stops are located on interstate highways and offer additional amenities such as food from restaurant chains such as Subway, Arby’s and Carl’s Jr., trucking supplies, showers and RV dump stations.
Love’s has been at the forefront of the convenience store and travel center industry for half a century. We were among the first to offer self-serve gasoline and groceries at the same time. We led the way on fresh deli sandwiches, quick-service restaurants and gift and novelty items, too.
And we’re searching for new ways to serve drivers through innovations such as our Truck Tire Care centers with roadside assistance service and getting drivers paid for their freight bills through our freight factoring group: Love’s Financial.
How We Started:
Tom and Judy Love opened a single gas station in far western Oklahoma back in 1964. A few short years later (1972), Love’s opened its first convenience store in Guymon, Okla., and soon after (1981), its first travel stop in Amarillo, Texas.
Since that time, Love’s chain of convenience stores and travel centers has expanded to more than 340 locations in 40 states nationwide.
What we Value:
We value all-things local. Local stores across the country contribute to local nonprofits each year, and the Love’s corporate office in Oklahoma City gives at least two percent of its net profits to local charities.
Each September, we raise money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. This campaign has raised more than $12 million over 16 years, helping 94 member hospitals across the country.
One situation with the truck stop is the height of the sign. Love’s wants a huge tall sign…Magee has zoning laws on the height of a sign. In fact, when McDonald’s rebuilt the store several years ago, Larry Partridge, owner, purposely did not change the golden arches because his sign requirements would have been much “shorter”…so our McDonald’s was “grandfathered in” before an ordnance was placed on the height of signs.
I’m just saying, do we change now just because a big chain demands their way??? I say no…look at Madison and how they handled the business that came into their city. Those business obeyed Mayor Mary Butlter Hawkins …she was a bulldog and didn’t budge…and Madison got pretty much everything they’ve wanted. Also, we have held other businesses to the restrictions…doesn’t seem fair to change just because a company is a big dog.
You may say yes, we change…anything to get business. Express yourself!!! The height of the sign will come before the Zoning Commission…let them know how you feel. Comment on this article or on our FB page…I want to know what you think!
I’m just saying, what will happen with the traffic now? Who plays a big roll in this? Is it MDOT or the City of Magee? (Lots of unanswered questions) I will be contacting different city officials for interviews concerning these issues. I have been told that a red light will be placed in the area kind of near the “speck” building on the highway. Love’s requires a red-light to eliminate the back up of trucks…hey, this could help with the bus situation…because “we” don’t have the pull or funds to require a red-light (kind of weird that we protect trucks and not buses…just saying…I’m sure that is not how it works but makes me think???
I’m just jumping around in this article…but today that is how my brain is working (if you call that working!). Here we are now with a possible giant truck stop and an elementary school all trying to get to and from their destination. I am for and have been for a consolidated county high school. I think maybe we should re-look at the entire situation under a new administration…back up and take a good look at where and how our county should move forward. We are at a crossroads, and we don’t need to take a wrong turn.
It seems to me that the old powers that be are coming to an end in the city of Magee and in my opinion it’s about time. For to long a small powerful few have made all the call on what the city should be and where it should be going. Who cares how tall there freaking sign is.. are you kidding I mean what intelligent argument can be made for hindering business for something so ludicrous? It’s just another excuse made up by a small group who can feel the power slipping from their hands. I for one will be glad when they’re gone! It’s those people that have continued to block alcohol sales which literally keeps any of the better restaurants and franchises out of the city along with all of the revenue and jobs that come with them and for what!?! to keep drunks of the road to keep the “criminal elements” away!?! uh hello have you looked around lately they’re are already drunks on the road and we have a serious crime problem for a city/town of this size so go blow that smoke somewhere else because the only thing you’re preventing is people from Magee and the surrounding areas from spending our money in Magee! I would love to be able to take my family out to a nice dinner and a movie without having to drive 45 minutes to do it! So come on Loves and bring your XXL sign because the city of Magee is open for business!!!!
*Brock*
I agree with that opinion and I hope one day Magee gets nicer restaurant like an Applebee’s or Chili’s or O’Charley’s or Cheddar’s or any other restaurant that will fill void in our city and county.
I am glad to see Magee get a new business but I am opposed to consolidating our high schools into one. I do see a need for Pinola to have their high school back and for Harrisville to get their k-12 school back one day. I do see Magee or Southern Simpson County getting their own school district one day if talk like consolidating our schools increases in time. I was born in 1970 when we had four high schools in our county and I am just saying the people in the Pinola area as well as the Harrisville will never vote to consolidating our schools into because their community will never get the schools which they need and the people of Magee and Mendenhall vote will be split 50-50 and I do not want to see Magee nor Mendenhall to lose their schools identity to consoldation at all.
The reason Harrisville does not have a school is not for lack of political will. It is because of the consent decree Lilly Hardy had put in place by the Federal Gov years ago. It is a demographic issue. The fed will not allow a school with majority Caucasians in a county under such a decree. So don’t blame anyone in Simpson County. Instead turn your gaze to Washington D.C. .
The people who lived in that area deserved their schools and they had schools back in the 1970’s thru the mid-1970’s. Your reason is just ridiculous because Mize has a lot white and they have a school there. The reason Harrisville does not have a school there today is nothing but politics and some people who just want one school in our county. It does not seem fair for the residents that live up their to have to wait two hours for a school bus for their children. For you to say a community in our county can not have their school because of some kind of consent degree that is not constitutional nor does it work at all. Pinola will get their high school back one day and that is a fact. Lille Hardy does work for the school district anymore and her reason why Harrisville cannot have their school is just stupid. The school is funding by the state and the local government not the federal government.
Ok let me rip this apart. Mize is not under a consent decree….. so that is a very poor example. Just because Hardy does not work at SCSD anymore does not mean the consent decree has went away. The schools get funding from the FED or there wouldn’t be a federal programs office at the Central Office which gets tons of money from the Federal gov. And for you to think that the federal government can’t dictate things on a state level is just laughable. How do you think integration happened? I bet there were people then saying they can’t do that it is unconstitutional. The county is still under this court order like it or not. They are under a microscope for every decision they make regarding race and demographics. You can have your own opinion Mr. MCCurdy but you can’t have your own facts….Sorry. Now here are some links for you to educate yourself and not rush to judgement.

I do know about the federal court order that you claimed our schools are still under and I am one who thinks and just like the rest of the county we have too many employees at the central office and Harrisville community needs their schools back. You claimed our schools gets money from the federal government. Everyone knows this money comes attached with strings to do what they want. Our schools are not breaking the order by building Magee a new elementary school campus and hopefully it will be a brick structure. I believe the Harrisville community deserved their schools and for you to say they can have their schools simply because of a federal court order is ridiculous. This court order is no longer needed just the preclearance part of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is no longer needed too.
From the looks of your reply below your just a blow hard who won’t listen to reason when it’s staring you in the face. I’m done with you because you would argue the sky is not blue if it did not suit your opinion. Good day sir.
Mr. Ivan does not know me but his comments about me are totally baseless and without merit and I simply disagree with him why Harrisville does not have a school their. I just wish he would understand our school district has more blacks working for them and it does not matter if you are black or white, it is common sense and it simply does not make any season why children in that area have to ride a school bus for two hours to get back home and why the same kids have to catch the school bus ride two hours earlier to get to school. I do see a need in that area for the Harrisville area to have their elementary schools back and one day that will happen. They(Harrisville) will never have their schools back if people vote for consolidation schools and I am one who is against school consolidation because it cause us more in the long run and I love to see my nephew and niece graduated from Magee High School as Trojans. I love my alma mater and love to see improve instead of erasing my alma mater replacing it with a consolidated schools this is something the big shots wants and the people of lived near Mendenhall wants too.
