I was blessed with many wonderful teachers during my years at Magee School. From Miss Mamie Lockhart in 1st grade…to Mrs. Lynn Tutor in Junior High (History) to Mrs. Freddis Hansbrough who tried so hard to teach me to sew!!! To Mrs. Agnes Puckett the smartest Math teacher in the world (and I was probably her worst student) …all of these teachers and more made a difference in my life. I really hesitate to name names! I will leave out so many…but I just decided to go with the ones who first came into my mind.
Miss Mamie Lockhart (Beth McCall Moore’s great aunt…who also lived in Beth’s house at one time)…had the neatest counting device. I think she was way ahead of common core. She made out of wood and colored thread spools…a stand up device that taught us how to add and subtract by using and looking at these thread spools…she had ten rows on the device…and 10 thread spools on each row…so that is how we learned to count…to add…and then to subtract! How smart was that! Miss Mamie just happened to live across the street from me so I saw her every day of my life…In fact, my Sunday School class at FBC is the Mamie Lockhart SS Class!
I simply adored Mrs. Tutor…I still call her my favorite teacher…she taught me to love history…she taught me to love learning…again, another teacher who taught “out of the box.” Some of our test would actually be cross word puzzles! Every time I see Mrs. Tutor…I say “hey my favorite teacher.”
Poor Mrs.Hansbrough…I was hopeless in Home Ec. I did fair with the cooking…but when we got to sewing…there was just no hope for me! Mrs. Hansbrough never gave up…she kept trying…and I still can’t hem a pair of pants…but I loved her. She would let us wave out the window at the boys as they went to football…not really…she just didn’t see us…All the junior high boys hung around the Home Ec door thinking we might throw them some scrapes from our cooking classes! I really think the boys were just nosy…because at that time…no girls in science and no boys in Home Ec. How crazy!
Mrs. Agnes Puckett was the ultimate math teacher. She was so ahead of her time…with her “new” math that she insisted be implemented into the math curriculum at Magee…long before any other school had this type math. I just wasn’t real smart…but thank goodness her son George was in my class…so she really took her time in trying to bring all of us into the “new” world of math.
I think of others…..and I’m just going to write some more later…but today, I say thank you to a group of adults that make a world of difference in the life of every child they teach. The endless hours put into their work and preparation for a class…has never been and will never be an 8-3 job as many thought years ago. Thank you teachers for loving learning…loving teaching…and loving your students. There are not enough “thank you” to ever show the appreciation you deserve.
On Tuesday, take time to say thank you to a teacher! Let them know how valuable they are!
I’ll always love my teachers and appreciate the difference they made in my life.

Thank you.
