My name is Eddie S. Loftin, and I am formally declaring my candidacy for re-election as Alderman Ward I for the City of Magee. As a long- time resident of Magee, it has been my honor and pleasure to serve the people of Ward I as well as the City of Magee for the past eight years. Due to my experience, education and background, I would humbly like to ask for your vote and support once again to serve a third term.
As a member of the Budget Committee, I am exceedingly proud of the growth and accomplishments the board has made on behalf of the citizens of Magee. The city has contributed financially to the new Magee Elementary School as well as to waive building permit fees for the construction of the school. The city has also installed a sanitary sewer service to the new elementary school. Other notable accomplishments the board has pursued and approved are: offering driver’s license operations at the Civic Center one day per month, constructing a pavilion at Magee City Park, resurfacing tennis courts at City Park, beginning FAA drainage and fencing project at Magee Airport, creating a walking/biking track at the R.L Everett Park, approving additions and expansion to the sportsplex, purchasing barricades for parades and special events, completing wireless internet to downtown Magee, approving the addition of a new roof for the Chamber of Commerce, converting downtown street lighting to LED lighting and a variety of other projects all without adding an advalorem tax increase.
The board is especially proud of our police and fire departments. In fact, Magee was just voted the 6th safest city in the state. The board continually has purchased equipment and vehicles for the Magee Police Department. The board recently approved a $92,192 DUI grant, adopted a helmet ordinance, and adopted the addition of a NOAA weather radio at the police department. The city also boasts one of the best volunteer fire departments in the state. In fact, the board has applied for grants for an additional fire station and assistance with roads to the new school.
As a Member of the Health Advisory Committee, I was pleased to oversee Magee being designated as a healthy hometown by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi, earning the city a $25,000 grant. The city promotes healthy living with events such as the one mile walk on Crazy Day and authorization of summer recreational programs.
I began my second term as Alderman Ward I by completing over 140 hours of coursework in city government and became a certified city official. This in addition to my over 30 years of managerial experience running a multi-million dollar corporation has given me the tools to continue making improvements to the City of Magee in a fiscally responsible manner. I was responsible for day to day operations, finances, and employment decisions 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I began my career at McCarty Farms working for H.F. McCarty, and culminated my career as Division Manager at Sanderson Farms, Inc. in McComb, MS. I have also travelled nationally and internationally as a consultant to advise various corporations in the poultry industry.
I was born in Jeff Davis County to the late Edgar and Mary Loftin. We later
moved to Magee, where both my parents taught school at Magee High School. I am a
graduate of Mississippi State University, earning a B.S. Degree in Poultry Science. I
proudly served as a member of the Mississippi National Guard for four years. I have
lived in Magee for the majority of my adult life and am proud to call it my home. I am
married to Nancy Stubbs Loftin, and we are the proud parents of two children; Randy
Loftin and Jacquelyn Loftin Odom, both Magee High School graduates as well as
Mississippi State University graduates. I am a proud grandfather of one granddaughter
and great grandfather of two girls. I am an active member of the First United Methodist
Church of Magee where I have served on administrative council, financial secretary,
nominations committee, offering committee, and building and facilities chairman. I am a
member of the Mississippi State University Alumni Association where I have served as
membership chairman for Simpson County. I am also a member of the Bulldog Club.
As Alderman Ward I, I have made a sincere effort to canvas the area to ensure
everyone’s needs are met. I have also responded to everyone’s requests to make
sure each concern was addressed. I have worked diligently to help continue to
grow and build the economy of Magee. Magee is continually attracting new businesses.
Our community is thriving, and I am excited about the businesses in the community as
well as the improvements the city has been able to make. In most cases, I have worked
with many of our citizens personally. As challenges and opportunities will arise in the
future, I am prepared to assist our new mayor and my colleagues on the board. I
sincerely and humbly ask for your vote and your support on May 2 to help re-elect me,
Eddie S. Loftin, as Alderman Ward I.
Thank you,
Eddie Loftin
