Nearly all of us have heard the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child”.
The proverb suggests that children need the support of several adults, family and extended family, neighbors, teachers, professionals, and community members, to live meaningful lives and to become successful.
That’s exactly what several community partners did recently. They joined forces to help expectant mothers, foster moms, and babies.
“Children are always a blessing but that doesn’t mean that raising them is always easy. Feeling support from family, friends, and community brings a sense of relief in knowing you aren’t at it alone. One can move from a sense of helplessness to hopefulness within minutes knowing they have a support system rooting for them. I’m so thankful to be a part of a community that recognizes this,” said Center for Pregnancy Choices of Simpson County Executive Director Melissa Sullivan.
Nonprofit, Katina’s Klassroom, was a part of the village that joined forces with businesses for a Baby Shower for the Center for Pregnancy Choices.
“As a passionate advocate for the health and well-being of our community; especially children, Katina’s Klassroom was thrilled to support our neighbors’ babies and work with community partners,” said Katina’s Klassroom Nonprofit Founder Katina Rankin.
The event offered a nurturing environment for mothers. Moms were able to connect with a community resource leader, share their personal stories, and celebrate their little ones.
“As a mother myself, and with many of our team members being mothers, this event hits close to home,” said Dr. Terah Shelby at Magnolia Smiles Family Dentistry of Magee.
Magnolia Smiles Family Dentistry of Magee provided toddler toothbrushes, toothpaste, and more to the event.
“Motherhood is such a blessing, and we are thankful to be a small part in helping other mothers in their journey. We are proud to serve the wonderful people of Magee and Simpson County,” Dr. Shelby continued.
The event provided other baby items like diapers, wipes, bottles, clothes, educational tools, and other baby essentials for new mothers to have a great start.
Having a great start is exactly why Vice-President of Priority One Bank, Lee Maddox, said they were glad to join the effort.
McAlister Deli’s General Manager Brooke Jordan said the reason was a bit more personal for her. She’s a single mother of an infant.
“I decided to contribute to this event because as for myself, I am a single mother of a 5-month-old. I know firsthand what it is like to need items for your baby. I would have been more than grateful to have experienced an opportunity like this when I was pregnant with my baby. This is a great opportunity for this small community to come together for those in need,” said McAlister’s General Manager and Recent Mom Brooke Jordan.
Attendees also participated in fun children’s activities like coloring and identifying shapes. Children also had books read to them during the event.
“It was an event not just about providing essential items, but also fostering a supportive network for new mothers in Simpson County,” said Rankin. “We were beyond happy to share in this new mother/baby beginning with our community members. Our nonprofit is committed to ensuring that every child has the best start in life when they enter our community.”
