The Scriptural passage chosen for today is found in Colossians 3:16: “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” The Word of God for the people of God; thanks be to God. Amen! Here we have words being delivered to the early church by one of God’s chosen, telling them to remain steeped in the teachings of Christ as they went about instructing and encouraging their fellow believers. The singing of hymns was a large part of their gatherings, along with the fellowship, eating together, and the sharing of testimonies. Many of our fundamentalists churches today operate on the same premise. If not, we should. This Scripture holds true for all time, not just for those early church-goers. Let us hold fast to the teachings of Christ and continue the singing of hymns, psalms, and spiritual songs with gratitude in our hearts. “Gimme that old-time religion; gimme that old-time religion. Gimme that old-time religion; it’s good enough for me.”
