The Magee Fair is a project of the Magee Fire Department to raise money for the F. J. Dickey Scholarship Fund. Scholarships are awarded to students at Simpson Academy and Magee High School.
F. J. Dickey was my daddy!!! I cannot express how much these scholarships mean to our family. My daddy believed in education…and he would not have been able to attend college without assistance. As a young child, he walked several miles to school. My daddy was blessed with a mother and father who recognized the importance of education. My daddy went on to play football at Co-Lin Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi. He was named to the Athletic Hall of Fame at both schools and was Mr USM. Following graduation from college, “Dickey” (as my daddy was called) enlisted in the US Navy.
During his time in the Navy, he became aware of the true dangers of fire and how to control fires. He brought that knowledge home to Magee with him…and was a founding member of the Magee Fire Department serving as Fire Chief until his death in 1971. When our fire department choose to establish the scholarship, our family was touched beyond belief…I don’t think anyone will ever know what that decision meant to my mother.
Our family does not have any “say so” in who receives the scholarships…but I always watch for the posting of who received the F. J. Dickey scholarships. I don’t know of anything that is more of an honor to the memory of my daddy and an honor to my family as the scholarship.
His life just keeps on giving…and that my friends…explains his character…a man of giving, helping, and supporting.
If you decide to attend the fair, don’t think of it as only a fun night for your family but as a chance to continue a mission started in 1971…for the best daddy any little girl could ever have…
