Leona Bridges McAlpin of Magee, Mississippi was born in Prentiss, Mississippi on December 3, 1925 and died January 20, 2021.
She is survived by her son, Thomas Z. McAlpin (Penny) of Magee, MS and a daughter, Deborah Fryery (Bobby) of Meridian, MS; four grandchildren, Tom Z. McAlpin, Jr. (Cameron) of Magee, MS, Tyler H. McAlpin (Kathryn) of Diamondhead, MS, Tate 0. McAlpin (Jennifer) of Vicksburg, MS and Kristen Fryery Hill (Jeremy) of Meridian, MS. She is survived by great grandchildren, Trey McAlpin of Magee, MS, Mary Taylor McAlpin, Tyler McAlpin, Mitch McAlpin and Mikey McAlpin of Diamondhead, MS, Finley McAlpin and Harper McAlpin of Vicksburg, MS and Mason Hill of Meridian, MS.
She is also survived by Joe David Warren (Bo), longtime special friend and several nieces and nephews; as well as extended family and friends she loved dearly.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, L.C. McAlpin, her parents Thomas and Dora Bridges; brothers, Breland Bridges, Grady Bridges; sisters, Christine Jenkins and Lula McGaughey. Mrs McAlpin attended Prentiss High School and her childhood church was Whitesand Baptist Church.
Upon graduating from Prentiss High School, she was employed by Lester and Witcher Abstracting Company in Mendenhall, Mississippi. At this time, she met L.C. McAlpin. He soon enlisted in the U. S. Navy and after serving two years, returned home to claim the waiting Miss Leona as his bride. After starting their family, they decided to make Magee, Mississippi their home. They owned and operated a dairy farm and Mrs. Leona worked at USDA Farmers Home Administration, retiring in 1994 after thirty years of service.
She was an active participant of First Baptist Church of Magee, as a member of Ruth’s Sunday School Class, The Inspirations, the Silvertones Choir and through her service in many other capacities. She loved her Lord, she loved her church and she was her happiest in time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
For the past year, Mrs. McAlpin was a resident of Lakeview Assisted Living facility in Magee, where she was loved by all who knew her. Even as a resident, she continued to impact the lives of others through her selfless acts of compassion and kindness. She was always generous and giving of her time to care for others in any way possible.
Pallbearers will be Tom Z. McAlpin, Jr., Tyler H. McAlpin, Tate 0. McAlpin, Trey McAlpin, Drummonds McAlpin, Richard Womack, and Jeremy Hill.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at 1:00 pm at Sharon Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Smith County, Mississippi.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Silvertones Choir of First Baptist Church of Magee, Mississippi or the charity of your choice. The family wishes to thank the management and staff of Lakeview Assisted Living, Magee General Hospital, and Dr. Frank Wade, MD for the wonderful, attentive care given to Mrs. Leona.
