The Simpson Academy Cougars fell to the Leake Academy Raiders on Friday night 23-14.
The Cougars struck first with a dominating 80 yard opening drive that was capped off by a 9 yard touchdown pass from Brentley Berry to Matt Adcock. On the very next possession, the Raiders responded with a 62 yard drive of their own and finished off with a 1 yard TD run by Rhett Atkinson. Then with 3 seconds left in the first quarter, Brentley Berry hit Sawyer Dunn on a hitch route, he broke 1 tackle and scampered for a 60 yard touchdown pass. The Cougars led after the first quarter, 14-7.
Then with 6:54 left in the half, Leake Academy scored on a 45 yard run by Rhett Atkinson. The Cougars were unable to respond. Finally with the half winding down, Atkinson scores again on another 1 yard run. Leake Academy went into the locker room with a 20-14 lead.
The 3rd quarter was a defensive battle and neither team could get on the scoreboard. Later, with 8:27 left in the game, Leake Academy kicker, Cole Arthur made a 27 yard field goal to seal the deal.
Brentley Berry was 8-18 for 136 yards and 2 touchdowns. Carter Cockrell had 23 carries for 83 yards. Sawyer Dunn finished the night with 3 receptions for 94 yards and a touchdown.
The Cougar defense was led by Westin Frye with 8.5 tackles, Matt Adcock with 7 tackles, and Hayden Franklin with 5 tackles and an interception.
The Cougars fall to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in their conference. Simpson will travel to Madison St. Joe for another conference matchup on Friday night.
