Laura Jean Butler (née Garrett) entered eternal life at the age of 83 on Thursday afternoon, January 14, 2016 at approximately 4:00 p.m. in Fairhope, Alabama, while at home with her children and granddaughter.

Jean was born on June 20, 1932 in Magee, Mississippi, the eldest child of Homer and Gertrude Garrett (née Thames). She graduated from Magee High School and Drones Business College. Jean lived most of her working life in Jackson, Mississippi where she worked in keypunch and data processing, retiring from McRae’s/Belk at the age of 70 to be with her daughter and granddaughter in Fairhope, Alabama.
Jean was an avid life-long reader who especially enjoyed biographies and historical novels. Her hobbies also included cooking, plants, shopping, and following news and current events, both local and national. She was a smart conversationalist and wonderful listener with a sharp sense of humor and an eye for the truth. In her retirement years, Jean was a volunteer at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope and a regular at the Fairhope Public Library. She spent much of her time with her granddaughter, Laura, and was devoted to her immediate family and in close contact with her extended family.
She is predeceased by her husband, Edward Butler, and both her parents.

She is survived by her children Georgia Elizabeth Brown (of Fairhope, AL), Charles David Butler (of Jackson, MS) her granddaughter, Laura Elizabeth Brown (of Fairhope), her sister, Mary Helen Shealy (of Miramar Beach, FL), her brother, Gary Garrett (of Magee), her sister, Nancy Abernathy (of Laurel, MS) and her loving nieces and nephew.
