Dangerous Cold Expected
A long duration of cold weather event, rare for this time of year is expected from tonight to Christmas morning. Temperatures as low as single digits in North Mississippi to teens farther south are expected. Across much of our region, temperatures will remain below freezing from late tonight through the morning hours on Christmas Day. In addition, strong and gusty north winds will result in wind chill readings below zero by Friday morning and in the single digits Saturday morning. Hypothermia will be likely with prolonged exposure, with frostbite being possible in 30 minutes or less in the extreme threat area. Damage to exposed pipes will be likely and water main breaks can be expected. Be sure family, neighbors, and pets have a warm place to stay.Light Icing Possible
Light icing is possible on roads and bridges in northern Mississippi as a cold front swings through Thursday evening and early Friday morning. Roads and bridges may freeze quickly as cold air ushers in behind the front. Use caution when out on the road and do NOT hit the breaks. Use steady pressure on the gas pedal and accelerate and decelerate slowly.Strong Winds Possible Late Week
Strong winds are likely in our forecast area this evening through Friday. The front will be bring sustained winds between 20 to 25 mph with gusts to 40 mph during this period. These wind gusts can cause weak trees and limbs to break and fall. Light objects can be blown away and damage to weak buildings are possible. High profile vehicles can become unsteady at winds of such speed.
