Lady Wolves Steamroll Lady Bulldogs in First Conference Win

 

WESSON – The Co-Lin Women’s Basketball team earned their first conference win after a contest against Holmes on Monday, January 10. The Lady Wolves used a smothering defense and steady offense to beat the Lady Bulldogs, 80-48.

The Lady Wolves used the opening minutes of the first quarter to gain and grow the lead outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 16-2 and led by that score with just over four minutes remaining. The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Wolves, 9-4, to close out the first quarter, but the Lady Wolves held a 20-11 lead as the buzzer sounded.

 

The Lady Bulldogs went on a 12-6 scoring run in the opening minutes of the second quarter to cut the lead down to 26-23 with six minutes remaining in the first half. However, the Lady Wolves responded with a 16-5 scoring run to close out the half and take a 42-28 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

 

The second half belonged to the Lady Wolves as they held the Lady Bulldogs to a combined 20 points allowing 12 points in the third and eight points in the fourth while scoring 38 in the half with 20 in the third and 18 in the fourth to earn the 80-48 win.

 

For the second consecutive game, sophomore guard Aniya Sanders (Vicksburg) led all scorers in the contest. Sanders scored 23 points while adding two assists and led the Lady Wolves in rebounds and steals with eight and four respectively. The rebounds and assists marks also led all players in the contest.

 

Freshman guard Zykeria Anderson (Edwards) added 17 points with four rebounds, four assists, and three steals while sophomore guard Marvia Spann (Madison) added 13 points with one rebound, one assist, and a team leading five steals.

 

Freshman guard Tandria Minor (Brandon) had eight points, while sophomore forward Jakiylah Esco (Ridgeland) had seven points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Jakyra Young (Kosciusko) had five points, sophomore forward Madelynn Webster (Pocahontas) had four points, and freshman forward Kiersten Ball (Louisville) had three points to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

 

The Lady Wolves improve to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play and will return to action with a road contest against nationally ranked (11th) Jones College on Friday, January 14. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m., at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
