The Mississippi College women’s soccer team continued a dominant start to the NCCAA Tournament with a 4-0 win over Trinity Christian on Tuesday afternoon at the Austin-Tindall Soccer Complex.
The Lady Choctaws (14-3-3) outshot the Lady Tigers (19-6) by a count of 27-2 and posted 15 corner kicks to just two for CCC.
Freshman Jess Davenport scored her second goal of the tournament and 13th of the season in the 20th minute, an unassisted goal that proved to be the game-winner as the MC defense pitched another shutout.
In the 27th minute, sophomore Caitlin Hayes scored her eighth goal of the season on a header, giving her the second-highest total on the team behind Davenport. Senior Sayit Mejia Bello assisted on the goal, giving her eight on the season, which ties senior Meghan Dodge for the team-lead.
The match went into the half with MC holding a 2-0 lead, but freshman Gaylynn Cooper extended the advantage in the 53rd minute when she tallied her seventh goal of the season on an assist from sophomore Hannah Bailey.
Mejia Bello put the final tally on the board in the 72nd minute when she scored her seventh goal of the season.
The MC back line, spearheaded by Dodge and Hayes, allowed just two shots in the first 15 minutes and shut the Lady Tiger offense down the rest of the way.
Freshman goalkeeper Andrea McDonald extended her school record with her 10th shutout of the season, making two saves in the match.
The Lady Choctaws will wrap up pool play on Thursday when they face Trinity Christian at 5:00 pm (ET). MC will need a win or a draw to advance to the national championship game, scheduled for Saturday at 3:00 pm (ET).
