Mrs. Keri McRaney, FLAG teacher at Simpson Central School, was recently awarded a grant from MPE for a project entitled, Super Sleuths. This project will give students the chance to become crime scene investigators with lessons and labs in life, physical, and earth sciences as well as critical thinking through hands-on experiences solving realistic crime scene scenarios using forensic techniques. Students will begin lessons and activities the second semester of school and continue throughout the remainder of the school year. As part of the FLAG program gifted students need an opportunity to become practitioners in a field of study that empowers them to use thinking skills and solve problems. Super Sleuths is designed to engage and motivate students with scientific principles while developing critical thinking skills and exploring career opportunities.

Mrs. Keri McRaney, has been selected as a recipient of a Conrad Castle Teacher Grant this year. The Conrad Castle Teacher Grant was developed in 2010 by Mississippi Association for Gifted Children to honor Dr. Castle’s dedicated service to the gifted children of Mississippi and to assist teachers of gifted children in the acquisition of appropriate materials designed to challenge intellectually gifted students. Keri McRaney was recognized during the Opening Session of the MAGC conference which was held in October at the Clyde Muse Center Auditorium. The grant entitled “Hoot of a Time!” will provide second and third grade gifted students learning experiences to explore the world of owls. The unit is designed to appeal to a variety of learners through reading, art, writing, performing arts, music, and nature. The grant will cover expenses for instructional materials and a field trip experience for the second and third grade students in her gifted classes.
