Katherine McCarley made such a difference in my life! Many of you may not know Katherine, but she lived most of her life right here in Magee. I was blessed to live just down the street from her, and I will always miss her presence.
Katherine and her husband Kendrick owned and operated Home Appliance on Main Street, right across from my parents’ business, Dickey’s. As a young girl growing up on Main Street, I darted in and out of their store all times of the day! They later built a new building located in front of the old Mims Mitchell Funeral Home, which today houses Boswell activities.
Katherine wasn’t just a neighbor or a business owner to me—she was my Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church. I was the only girl my age who actually attended. (Now, there were girls on the roll, but they just didn’t come!) Every Sunday, Katherine faithfully prepared her lesson just for me and poured her love for Jesus into my heart. I never forgot how important she made me feel—that I was worth preparing for, even if it was only one student.
Katherine’s daughter, Connie, later decided it was time for her mama to move to the Coast, and so she did. But Magee will always be the place Katherine called home.
When I saw this picture, I knew I had to share it. Pictured with Katherine is her younger sister, Mary Jo Wedgeworth, her son Ken, her daughter Dawn, Katherine herself, and her daughter Connie McCarley.
Katherine will always hold a special place in my heart.
Katherine is 96 years old and still beautiful with a bright shining smile.
