The Tuesday, June 1, 2021 Board of Aldermen meeting began with a report on the SASE apartments.  Fire Marshal Charlie Valadie reported the conditions of the apartments.  Senator Sampson Jackson, owner of the SASE apartments, assured the Board he will be cleaning up the area.

Aldermen Whitney Baker, Matthew Hickman, & Lane Steele were present.  Aldermen Patrick Brown and Angel Brister connected to the meeting by phone.

Mayor Berry reported the City Park a looking good.  Continued work is taking place at the park.

McNair Spring pavilion bathrooms are in awful condition, according to Berry.  The bathrooms have been locked…the locks are broken…continued problems with vandalism.  Alderman Baker suggested putting cameras at the Springs’ pavilion.  Assistant Police Chief Chris Jones informed the Mayor and Board that the cameras at the City Park have helped tremendously.  Jones felt the cameras would help with problems at the Springs.

Mayor Berry announced that the Swearing-in of the new board and mayor will be held July 1, 2021 at 5 PM at the Civic Center.  (MageeNews.com will live stream the event). The first meeting with the new board and Mayor will be July 6, 2021.

The City will again sponsor fireworks for the 4th of July.  The display will be at the Sportsplex beginning at dark.  The fireworks show cost the city $2,700.

 

City Clerk Jon Styron reported that the bank statements for the city have been reconciled through January.  Styron expects to have all statements reconciled by the end of the month.

Mayor Berry informed the Board federal money (Recovery Fund) is scheduled to come to the city.  The Mayor stated that all federal funds will be placed in separate bank accounts to allow for easier and safer dispersement.

City Hall will be closed July 5, 2021.

Continued problems with the splash pad were discussed.  David Dunn, Parks and Rec, will be working with the city to look into other ways to provide water to the splash pad.  

The airport continues to “look good” according to Berry.  Hopefully the airport will receive a $22,000 grant.

The Mayor and Board accepted the resignation of EMS & Building Inspector Joe Worrell.  Joe has been with the city for 15 years.  His resignation is effective June 11, 2021.  

Mayor Berry appointed Phillip Magee to complete Worrell’s term, which ends July 1, 2021.  

Southern Pine is donating a tower to the city of Magee.  The City will be responsible for erecting the tower which could cost $40-50,000.  The tower will be available for all city services to use the tower.  Additional information will be given at a later date.

The US Land Management office has contacted the city about the “prison” building on Woodyard Road.  The people said we had a “prize” building!  The building leases for $2,500 per month.

Assistant Police Chief Chris Jones reported no police matters.

Police Chief Randy Crawford retires June 30, 2021.  Mayor Berry would like a new chief in house by July 19, 2021.  The first board meeting for the new year is July6, 2021.  At this time, the board members will see the resume’ for potential candidates.  The deadline for applications for Police Chief is July 2, 2021.  Interviews will be held on July 12th.

The pump has been installed in the ground in Ward 3.

With no other business, the meeting was adjourned.
