Ms. Johnye’s Life has always been guided by the love of her parents and the teachings of God’s word. She graduated from Magee High School and went on to Draughn Business College in Jackson, Mississippi. Upon graduating, she went to work at Columbus Air Force Base in Columbus, Mississippi. After her brother, Opal, was killed in the war she moved back home to Magee to help her parents and to attend The University of Southern Mississippi. Upon her marriage to Sam in 1946, Mendenhall has been the place she called home. Her love of Church and community made Ms. Johnye a faithful lady for all to love. She was a member of The First Baptist Church and loved singing in the choir and teaching young people in Sunday School and Training Union. She was involved in many school, girl scouting, and community projects. She worked many years as Assistant to the Southern Highway Commissioner and then after 17 years she retired from the Mississippi Power and Light Company. Her love of travel was one of her greatest joys along with working crossword puzzles, walking, and working in her yard. God is good and loving and so was Ms. Johnye. To know her was to love her – her sweet-sweet smile and her sweet disposition. For goodness has always followed her and now that goodness has followed her to the house of the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Johnson; father, John Hughes; mother, Cola Ates Hughes; brothers, Opal Hughes, Nathan Hughes and Travis Hughes.
Survivors include her son, Mark Johnson (Judy) of Magee; daughter, Samye Johnson of Biloxi; grandchild, Mara Hanson (Mike) of Madison; great grandchildren, Everett Hanson and Sam Hanson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Mendenhall, to the church and choir.
A Special thanks to the staff at Strong Villa Assisted Living for their love and car of Ms. Johnye.
