Jackson, Miss. —

Douglas Carswell, President and CEO of the Mississippi Center for Public Policy (MCPP), spoke Monday at the Jackson Rotary Club meeting at River Hills Country Club, delivering an optimistic outlook on Mississippi’s economic future and the policy reforms driving the state’s resurgence.

In his address, titled “Mississippi Is on the Up!”, Carswell outlined how deregulation, economic freedom, and conservative reforms have helped position Mississippi as one of the fastest-improving states in the nation — and one increasingly watched both nationally and internationally.

“Mississippi’s story is changing,” Carswell said. “Through smart reforms and a willingness to challenge the status quo, our state is proving that growth follows freedom.”

Carswell highlighted more than $40 billion in new investment flowing into Mississippi, along with population growth that reflects renewed confidence in the state’s economy. He also pointed to Mississippi’s historic decision to eliminate the state income tax, making it the first state to do so since Alaska in 1980.

“Ending the income tax was a signal that Mississippi is serious about competing, rewarding work, and building long-term prosperity,” Carswell said.

The remarks also emphasized the role of deregulation in attracting investment and noted that additional policy victories remain on the horizon.

“The question is no longer whether Mississippi can succeed,” Carswell said. “It’s how far we’re willing to go.”
