Hsu,-JohnnyCLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College’s Johnny Hsu has been named the Gulf South Conference Freshman Golfer of the Year, it was announced on Friday (April 28).

Hsu (New Taipei City, Taiwan) helped lead the Choctaws to a huge turnaround season in 2017, finishing 4th (899) in the GSC Tournament this week in Pine Mountain, Ga. MC finished 10th (2016) and 11th (2015) in the last two conference tournament appearances.

Individually, the rookie won the Buccaneer Spring Classic, held at the North Creek Golf Course in Southaven, Miss. Hsu fired a three-round score of 210 (E) to win by four shots. The Choctaws would go on to win the team title, as well, shooting 854 (+14) over three days to win by 31 shots.

Hsu had three other top 10 finishes, tying for 2nd at the Badger Invitational at the end of February and tying for 5th at the MC Spring Invitational in early March. He closed out the impressive season by finishing t-19th (228) at the Gulf South Conference championships.

Johnny was twice named GSC Freshman of the Month, earning the honors in March and April of 2017. On the season, he played in 10 tournaments, averaging a score of 75.02 over 26.5 rounds played.

Chandler Blanchet of West Florida was named GSC Golfer of the Year for the second straight season, while Steve Fell of West Florida was named the Coach of the Year for the 14th time.
