John West Stewart, 78, of Jackson, passed away unexpectedly on October 30th after a brief illness.

John West was born March 13, 1947, in Vicksburg and was raised in Fayette, Mississippi. He played multiple sports in his youth and particularly had fond memories of his football and basketball experiences at Jefferson County High School. After attending Delta State and the University of Southern Mississippi, he married Rebecca “Beckey” Colebank. The couple resided in Jackson for the next 55 years. John West was employed by GMAC Finance his entire business career. The couple had two children, Hyde and West, who they raised in Jackson. The family has been long time members of Christ United Methodist Church.

John West was an avid sportsman and loved the outdoors. He hunted at “Spring Hill Hunting Club” in Jefferson County for decades and spent countless hours hunting with his brother Dudley Stewart, his son West Stewart and his grandson, Manoli, whom he taught his love for the outdoors. John West also loved the Ole Miss Rebels, and the University of Mississippi, where both of his children and one granddaughter attended and graduated. He was a football season ticket holder and stayed extremely informed about all news related to Ole Miss Football, which was an avocation and passion.

Most of all, and as his highest priority was his family. He was extremely proud of his daughter Hyde and son West, and spent many family vacations in Destin, Fla., as well as time in Augusta, Ga. and Richmond, Va. John West treasured the time spent with family, including his children and grandchildren’s sports events and graduations. He doted on his grandchildren and was known as “Papa Jack” to them. Papa Jack had a great sense of humor, always at the ready with a joke or quick-witted quip, always keeping those around him entertained or on their toes. You never knew when the practical joke might come. He is loved and will be missed, but the memories he leaves will be eternal.

John West Stewart is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rebecca Colebank Stewart, of Jackson, his daughter Rebecca Hyde Stewart Loupassi (Manoli) of Richmond, Va., his son John West Stewart, Jr. (Traci) of Augusta, Ga., four grandchildren Jane Doxey Loupassi, Rebecca Stewart Loupassi, Manuel George Loupassi, and Maezell West Stewart. He is predeceased by his father Isaac Dudley Stewart, his mother Jane Hyde West Stewart, and his brother Isaac Dudley Stewart, Jr.

The family will receive friends and family at Sebrell Funeral Home, 425 Northpark Drive, Ridgeland, Miss. on Tuesday, November 4, 2025 from 10:00am-12:00pm. A private burial will follow directly afterwards in Natchez, Mississippi. In lieu of flowers, please send a contribution to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

May his memory be eternal.

(John West and his wife Beckey lived in Magee in the early 70’s)
