Press Release from Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Department (Tim Culpepper Investigator)

On May 3, 2019 around 9:00 pm, one of our deputies responded to a call and encountered a subject who said he wasn’t going to jail. The suspect retrieved a firearm and shot the deputy hitting him in the leg. The deputy was transported to the hospital by another deputy who was also responding to the call.

Kelvin Jenkins Recognized @ Board of Supervisors Meeting for 17 years of Dedicated Service

We were assisted by Forest County Sheriff’s Department, Marion County Sheriff’s Department, Simpson County Sheriff’s Department, Magee Police Department, Covington County Sheriff’s Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Lamar County Sheriff’s Department, Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, Prentiss, PD, MBN, MBI, and several of our own deputies and investigators. The scene was surrounded and negotiations began in an attempt to resolve the situation peacefully. Early in the standoff, the suspect opened the front door of the trailer and shot at officers. Officers returned fire. Fortunately, no one was injured. We were assisted by the Jones County SWAT team and their armored truck. Entry was made in the front of the trailer and more shots were fired at officers, but no shots were returned. Negotiations began again and the suspect came out and was taken into custody without incident.

No names are being released at this time. The incident is still under investigation. The deputy that was shot is doing fine and is home recovering.

I want to thank all of the agencies that assisted with this incident and brought it to a peaceful conclusion.

The suspect, Timothy Taylor, 38 years old, of Prentiss, MS has been charged with the following:

1.            Attempted Murder of a Police Officer

2.            Aggravated Assault of a Police Officer

3.            3 Felony drug charges while in possession of a firearm

4.            Possession of paraphernalia

Timothy Taylor had an initial appearance on Saturday and was not given a bond.
