After 32 years on the faculty at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM), Dr. Jay Dean has been appointed acting director of the Southern Miss School of Music.

Serving for three decades as the music director of the Symphony Orchestra, Dean retired from that position in June 2017. He continued as the associate dean for arts and external relations in the College of Arts and Sciences.

“I am looking forward to working closely with the outstanding faculty, staff, and students within the School of Music and continuing the excellent work for which the school has been known for many years” Dean said. “Also, I look forward to the opportunity to continue building meaningful relationships for the school throughout the community and the state.”

Dr. Chris Winstead, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences announced the appointment in July, making the position effective August 1, 2019.

“Dr. Dean’s leadership as music director led to sustained international recognition for the Southern Miss Symphony Orchestra. His vision, drive, talent, and administrative ability were central to this success. I am thrilled that he will be applying those same skills to leading the School of Music as a whole.  His commitment to Southern Miss and the School of Music is unparalleled.”

Dr. Dean continues to serve as the executive director of the Arts Institute of Mississippi at USM; the executive director of the Hattiesburg Concert Association; co-artistic director of FestivalSouth; the general and artistic director of Mississippi Opera; and the artistic adviser to the Natchez Festival of Music.

“All of these cultural activities help connect the university throughout the state, and continue to provide professional opportunities for USM faculty members and students” Dean said.
