James “Wilson” Floyd Jr., 83, died on February 12, 2024, at his home in Magee. Wilson was born June 2, 1940, in Seminary, MS, to J.W. and Ora (Sis) Maddox Floyd. He grew up working the farm with his family.
In 1960, Wilson graduated from Magee High School and then received his associate’s degree from Copiah Lincoln Jr. College in 1962. He enlisted in the Navy and was on the USS Oriskany in the Pacific Fleet and then later stationed at North Island in San Diego, California. He loved his time in the Navy and often told stories about his adventures and friends. He was honorably discharged in 1966 and returned home to Magee. He married Carol Yelverton on June 10, 1967. He was a poultry and cattle farmer for 40 years and retired in 2007. He was an avid reader, loved to travel with Carol and loved to grow a garden.
Wilson is survived by his wife, Carol; daughter, Angie (Chris); granddaughter, Olivia; siblings, Rowena, Lequieta, and Pat; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and beloved son, James.
Wilson will be remembered for being hardworking, generous to those in need, and opinionated. He always gave the best advice and will be missed tremendously by his family.
Wilson requested there not be a public funeral, so per his wishes, the family will hold a private family service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army, a charity he supported for years.

Charles, I’m so glad to hear from you. Wilson had prostate cancer approximately 10 years ago then it went to his bones. He went to the VA during this time. He told me all about you running into each other in Japan. He talked about you and the ship you were on. I believe it was the Hornet. He really enjoyed the navy. I’m sure you enjoyed it also. So glad you let me hear from you.
