James Melvin Bishop of Braxton passed away at his residence on Monday, December 16, 2024. He was 64 years old. He was born on February 20, 1960, to Webb Bishop and Rose Pohl Bishop in San Diego, California.
Melvin worked in the oilfield business for over thirty years and then for Walmart.
He loved spending time with his family, and when they all got together, it was a lot. He enjoyed fishing, playing pool, and playing poker in his free time. His family could always count on him as the head of their family. He cherished all the times spent with them and all the memories made. His wonderful abundance of grandchildren made his life special.
He is survived by his wife of twenty-two years, Lisa Pope Bishop; sons, Michael Bishop, Ricky Grubbs (Kimberly) and Kevin Smith (Krysta); daughters, Melanie Summerlin and Krista Smith; brothers, Larry Bishop and David Bishop; twenty-one grandchildren; mother-in-law, Faye Pope; brothers-in-law, Robbie Pope (Joann), Mike Pope (Loretta) and Tim Pope (Joy).
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Webb and Rose Marie Bishop; sister, Tammy Garner; brother, Ron Story; and grandchildren, Jacob and Evelyn Bishop.
Visitation for family and friends will be on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at Tutor Funeral Home in Mendenhall, MS, from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM. The funeral service will be at 3:00 PM in the Tutor Funeral Home Chapel, with Brother Timothy Carlisle officiating. Interment will follow in Southern Memorial Gardens in Magee.

Arrangements are entrusted with Tutor Funeral Home of Mendenhall.
