Jackson State Makes History, While USM Loses 3rd In A Row

Coming home from a close loss to Coastal Carolina, Southern Miss was still looking for their sixth win of the year, something not accomplished since 2019. This past Saturday, the Eagles hosted the South Alabama Jaguars, one of the top Sun Belt Conference football programs this season. Southern Miss was 0-2 in their rivalry against the Jaguars and were looking to fix that with a win. The USM Nasty Bunch Defense worked hard in the first quarter as the Eagles led the game 7-3. However, the Jags gained a 13-10 lead at halftime. Southern slowed down in the second half, allowing USA to score two more touchdowns, while the Eagles themselves settled for only one touchdown and a field goal, allowing South Alabama to leave Hattiesburg with a 27-20 win over the Golden Eagles.

Having two of their most historic seasons in their time, the Ole Miss Rebels have been taking the national spotlight for their games and players. Coming off a 30-24 loss at home against #8 Alabama, the Rebels needed to let themselves shine in a win against unranked Arkansas. The Rebels landed in Fayetteville Friday in preparation for Saturday’s game against the Razorbacks. Despite falling 42-27 to Arkansas, Ole Miss had their best offensive game of the season as the Rebel offense totaled up 703 total yards, their most since their 52-28 win over Vanderbilt 5 weeks ago (591 total yards.)

Mike Leach has always been a creative playmaker at Washington State and Texas Tech, and this has not changed in his 3rd year as head coach for Mississippi State. After a 45-19 home loss against #1 Georgia, Mississippi State got a break from SEC play as the East Tennessee State Buccaneers came to Starkville. Record setting Bulldog quarterback Will Rogers added 301 more yards to resumé as MSU walked out of Davis Wade Stadium with a 56-7 win over the Bucs.

Deion Sanders has made his name known in the college football coaching world. In his second year as head coach at Jackson State, Sanders has brought large crowds to the MS Veterans Memorial Stadium, and high-scoring wins to the JSU Tigers program. This weekend, the Tigers traveled to Lorman, MS, to face their rivals, Alcorn State. Spinks-Casem Stadium (which has a capacity of 22,500) was packed with 31,017 eager JSU and Alcorn fans in one of the most anticipated games of any year, the Soul Bowl. 31,017 fans watched as the Tigers led the Braves the entire game, and ultimately won 24-13 over the Braves. The Tigers now lead the series with 48 wins, 37 losses, and 2 ties. The Tigers have also made history with their first undefeated regular season in history, with an 11-0 record.
