“I’ve never seen a hearse pulling a U-Haul”

The Scriptural passage chosen for today is found in Job 1:21: “Naked came I from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” Poor Job is one BIBLE character who has my full sympathy and admiration. I cannot fathom the extent and depth of his suffering; yet, through it all, he didn’t curse God. He knew that he was born with nothing, and he’d not leave the world with anything. Still, he thanked his Lord for providing him his family, his full barns, and manifold riches, as if they were on loan. Job knew none of it was his to claim, to keep. As we all know, and as my mother so wisely noted long before she departed this life, “I’ve never seen a hearse pulling a U-Haul.” Also, she often said to me, “There’s a reason shrouds have no pockets.” We can take nothing with us. Job knew this. I greatly admire Job and his abiding faith in God; however, I hope my faith is never tested as Job’s was. Amen!
