Inmate who died last week identified

JACKSON, MISS. – The inmate who died last week while in prison at the South Mississippi Correctional Institution in Leakesville has been identified as 58-year-old Joseph Phillip Knowles.

Knowles, who was pronounced dead at the Greene County General Hospital on March 30, was serving six years for possession of a controlled substance in George County. He was sentenced on July 23, 2018. His name had not been released, pending notification of the next of kin.

No foul play is suspected in Knowles’ death, according to the county coroner. An autopsy will determine the official cause and the manner of death.

I want a full copy of Joseph’s autopsy report. I also want to know who the next of kin was that was contacted. And why was he in Greene county instead of George county? I have been trying to get this information for almost 3 years now. Yet, still no response.
