JACKSON, MISS. – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is taking a moment to “paws” on National Mutt Day, to share the story of a puppy that was rescued after the quick actions of an MDOT worker in Tishomingo County.

Recently, MDOT District 1 Maintenance Tech David Walker was working on State Route 72 in Burnsville when he found a deceased puppy in the roadway. While removing the animal, he noticed another puppy in the right of way that was badly injured. Walker contacted the Tishomingo County Foster Rescue, who responded and picked up the injured pup.

The puppy had two broken hind legs and other injuries. The puppy’s story was shared on social media, and as a result, donations started pouring in to cover his costly surgeries. Gail Milligan who runs the Tishomingo County Foster Rescue appropriately named the puppy “MDOT,” after David Walker who found him.

In recent weeks, MDOT the dog has made miraculous improvements on the road to recovery. He continues to heal and can walk on all paws, although he may never have full use of his hind legs. Now expected to live a full life (in dog years), MDOT the dog is now looking for someone to adopt him. A family with young children who like to play would be ideal because MDOT the dog has miles of energy. Applications for adoption can be requested from the Tishomingo County Foster Rescue HERE.
