Melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, has been on the rise in recent years, even as other forms of cancer have declined. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from tanning booths is one contributing factor. If you’re heading to the tanning booth to get the summer look early, you need to know the dangers.
Indoor tanning is closely tied to the sharp rise in skin cancer among young women over the last 10 years. One study has found that women who use tanning beds in their teens or 20s could have two to six times the risk of developing skin cancer before age 50. The FDA recommends against indoor tanning by anyone under 18.
Indoor tanning is an unnecessary health risk. Avoid it, especially if you are younger. And to increase your protection against cancer, use sunscreen when you go outdoors on bright days, even in spring.
