Upon announcement of the permanent closing of the city of Magee swimming pool, I have received numerous calls, emails, and “talks” with people who spent their early childhood and teenage years at that pool!
Last week, I was shocked when a guy appeared at my door with these “never seen before by me” pictures of the pool when it was actually being built! Oh my goodness!!! I am not sure on the exact date of the building of the pool. I know the pool was built in the early 1960’s. A host of local citizens pushed for the building of this pool.
Notice in the pictures what is in the background. I am not sure what buildings are visible in one picture. I love the old vehicle in the other.
Story after story has been shared about “pool days.” Memories keep a bond between folks! Philip Magee shared about his years on the swim team. Kim Kennedy Neely talked of being at the pool everyday! One of my memories is pulling Dan Little out of the pool (I was the lifeguard). Dan dove in a shallow area and busted his head! We even had to take him to the hospital in an ambulance! That was my first ride in an ambulance! I would say the ambulance was more like a hearse! Dan was on the stretcher and I was beside him. The stretcher was flying from side to side. I finally told Dan I was just hanging on and he better do the same!
I asked our former Mayor Jimmy Clyde to share some of his memories.
“Wonderful memories of the pool all of the hard work that was done to organize the YMCA and even before that when it was the youth center the pool was the place to be. The swim teams were great, life guard classes gave kids great summer jobs and Saturday and Sunday afternoons at the pool with the kids was great family time. I remember the first birthday party I had there for Kristi I had to jump in and pull the first two out because they could not swim. That high diving board was something else. I never did learn how to dive. The church fellowships there were also great. Things changed when people began to get their own pools and have different interests but it was certainly great while it lasted. Many people invested some great time effort and resources for our children. I thought it was really nice when we had the swim meets here and even tried to form swim teams at the schools. Thanks to everyone who helped it happen for so many years for our community.”
