PSC CENTRAL DISTRICT COMMISSIONER DE’KEITHER STAMPS REMINDS CITIES, COUNTIES AND RESIDENTS TO IMMEDIATELY REPORT ANY NATURAL GAS SMELLS IN OR AROUND YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS

JACKSON, MS (February 2, 2024)— PSC Central District Commissioner De’Keither Stamps would like to remind all residents to remain vigilant and report any natural gas smells in or around their homes or businesses.  It is crucial to prioritize the safety of our communities and take immediate action if you detect a gas odor.

Natural gas is an essential energy source that provides heating, cooking, and other services to countless households.  However, it is vital to be aware of any potential gas leaks that may occur. Gas leaks can pose serious risks, including fire hazards, explosions, and health issues.

If you notice the distinct smell of natural gas, which is often described as a rotten egg odor, please take the following steps:

  • Leave the area immediately:  If you are inside your home or any building and detect a gas odor, evacuate the premises right away.  Do not delay or investigate the source of the smell.
  • Avoid potential ignition sources:  As you leave the area, ensure that you do not use any electrical switches, lighters, or any other devices that could create sparks.
  • Call emergency services:  Once you are at a safe distance from the suspected gas leak, call your local emergency services or the gas company’s emergency hotline.  Provide them with your location and a detailed description of the situation.
  • Do not attempt to fix the problem yourself:  Gas leaks require professional attention.  Do not try to locate or repair the leak yourself, as this can be extremely dangerous.  Leave it to the experts.
  • Warn others: If you are in a position to do so safely, inform your neighbors or anyone nearby about the gas odor and advise them to evacuate as well.

The prompt reporting of natural gas smells is of utmost importance for the safety of our residents and the swift resolution of any potential gas leaks.  Remember, it is always better to be cautious and report any suspicions than to risk the well-being of yourself and others.

“In conclusion, I urge all residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any natural gas smells in or around their homes,” said Commissioner Stamps.  “By doing so, we can ensure the safety and well-being of our community.”
