HYDE-SMITH READIES FOR FIRST TRANSPORTATION APROPRIATIONS HEARING WITH 118th COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS SET

Miss. Senator Takes Leading Role on Transportation, HUD Appropriations Subcommittee, Keeps Overall Committee Spots

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith’s (R-Miss.) first hearing as the new ranking member of the Senate Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies (THUD) Appropriations Subcommittee will occur Thursday as the Senate Appropriations Committee cranks up its review of the Biden FY2024 budget.

Hyde-Smith’s assignment to the THUD Appropriations Subcommittee is among several changes to her subcommittee assignments for the 118th Congress.  Overall, the Mississippi lawmaker retained her seats on the Senate Committee on Appropriations, the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, and the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration.

“My Republican colleagues and I may be at a disadvantage because of the 51-49 divide in the Senate, but that just means fighting harder for policies that are in the best interests of Mississippi and the nation,” Hyde-Smith said.  “I am excited with my new responsibilities on the Appropriations Committee and look forward to working with my colleagues in writing fiscally-responsible spending bills.  Overall, I’m also eager to work together where we can, particularly on writing a new Farm Bill and working to gain control of our borders.”

The THUD Appropriations Subcommittee’s first hearing is slated for 10:00 a.m. EDT, Thursday, March 23, to receive testimony from Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on his agency’s FY2024 budget request.

In addition to the U.S. Department of Transportation, which includes the Federal Aviation Administration and the Maritime Administration, the THUD Appropriations Subcommittee also has jurisdiction over the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and associated federal agencies.

The following is a review of Hyde-Smith’s 118th Congress subcommittee assignments:

Committee on Appropriations

  • Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies (Ranking Member)
  • Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies
  • Energy and Water Development
  • Homeland Security
  • Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies

Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry

  • Commodities, Risk Management, and Trade (Ranking Member)
  • Climate, Conservation, Forestry, and Natural Resources
  • Livestock, Diary, Poultry, Competition, Local Food Systems, and Food Safety and Security

Committee on Energy and Natural Resources (* Subcommittee confirmation expected Thursday, March 23)

  • Energy
  • National Parks

Committee on Rules and Administration
