HYDE-SMITH COSPONSORS BILL TO HONOR 13 AMERICAN HEROES KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN

Miss. Senator Promotes Bipartisan Effort to Award Congressional Gold Medals to Fallen U.S. Servicemembers

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) is an original cosponsor of legislation to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the 13 American servicemembers who lost their lives last month during a terrorist attack in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Hyde-Smith is among the 35 original sponsors of S.2756, a measure to honor those Armed Forces members who perished in an August 26 terrorist attack to disrupt the evacuation of American citizens and Afghan allies at the Hamid Karzai International Airport.

“These brave young servicemen and servicewomen served valiantly in terrible and dangerous circumstances to help save fellow Americans and allies.  Their heartbreaking loss at the hands of terrorists deserves the highest recognition no matter how one views the flawed U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan,” Hyde-Smith said.  “I hope Congress acts quickly to honor these heroes and the families they left behind.”

U.S. Senators Steve Daines (R-Mont.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) authored the legislation, which would grant Congress’ highest expression of national appreciation to:  Marine Corps Lance Cpl. David L. Espinoza, Marine Corps Sgt. Nicole L. Gee, Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Darin T. Hoover, Army Staff Sgt. Ryan C. Knauss, Marine Corps Cpl. Hunter López, Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Rylee J. McCollum, Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Dylan R. Merola, Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Kareem M. Nikoui, Marine Corps Cpl. Daegan W. Page, Marine Corps Sgt. Johanny Rosario Pichardo, Marine Corps Cpl. Humberto A. Sánchez, Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jared M. Schmitz, and Navy Corpsman Maxton W. Soviak.

A copy of S.2756 is available here.

U.S. Representative Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) introduced a companion measure, HR.5142, in the House of Representatives.  All members of the Mississippi delegation in the House cosponsored that legislation.
