HYDE-SMITH, COLLEAGUES RENEW FIGHT TO PRESERVE TITLE IX, PROTECT WOMEN’S SPORTS

Miss. Senator Again Backs Tommy Tuberville Bill to Ensure Schools Aren’t Forced to Allow Biological Males to Compete in Women’s Sports

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) today again joined U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) to preserve Title IX protections for female athletes and protect fair, safe competition in women’s sports.

Hyde-Smith is among the original cosponsors of the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, which Tuberville reintroduced Tuesday with the support of the new Republican-led leadership team.  The legislation would target federal funding for those schools or educational organizations that allow males to participate in women’s sporting events, as had been promoted by the Biden administration.

“Over the past four years, we’ve seen a concerted and completely misguided effort to redefine gender in ways that disregard biological reality and threaten the significant strides women and girls have made since the passage of Title IX,” Senator Hyde-Smith said.  “Eroding their ability to compete fairly jeopardizes decades of progress and ultimately results in lost opportunities.  It’s time to right this wrong, and I am proud to continue this fight with Senator Tuberville to protect women’s sports.”

“President Trump ran on the issue of saving women’s sports and won in a landslide,” said Senator Tuberville.  “70% of Americans agree—men don’t belong in women’s sports or locker rooms.  I have said many times that I think Title IX is one of the best things to come out of Washington.  But in the last few years, it has been destroyed.  While I’m glad that the Biden administration ultimately rescinded the proposed rule, Congress has to ensure this never happens again.  I am welcoming my first granddaughter this spring and won’t stop fighting until her rights to fairly compete are protected.  I hope every one of my colleagues will join me in standing up for our daughters, nieces, and granddaughters by voting for this critical bill.”

The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act would:

  • Ensure Title IX provisions treat gender as “recognized based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”
  • Ban recipients of federal funding from operating, sponsoring, or facilitating athletic programs that permit a male to participate in a women’s sporting event.

Hyde-Smith, an ardent protector of Title IX rights for girls and women, has cosponsored this and similar legislation in past sessions of Congress after the Biden administration used the 50th anniversary of Title IX—the 1972 law which prohibits sex-based discrimination in any educational program that is federally funded, to aggressively pursue a federal rule to allow biological males to compete in women’s sports.  Citing lawsuits and the November election of Donald Trump to the presidency, the Biden administration withdrew its radical rule related to transgender athletes.

Independent Women’s Voice, Concerned Women for America, and Heritage Action for America endorse the new effort to enact this legislation in the 119th Congress.
