Junior goalkeeper Humberto Pelaezspent his summer as the starting goalkeeper for Memphis City FC of the National Premier Soccer League.
Pelaez (Panama City, Panama) was voted as the team’s MVP for the season, allowing just 12 goals in 13 games and helping lead the Rogues to a runner-up finish in the Southeast Division Championships to Chattanooga FC.
“I was planning on spending the summer with my family in Panama, but Coach (Kevin) Johns suggested playing over the summer to increase my level of play,” said Pelaez. “While Memphis City was a new club that had some challenges, I’m so grateful for the opportunity to have played with the club. I was so proud of the way our team came together and played hard all season long.”
Memphis City FC head coach Chris Harrington spoke glowingly about his keeper’s play this summer.
“I really don’t think the summer could have gone much better for Humberto,” said Harrington. “I believe he was the best keeper in the league. You could really see the confidence our team had that he was behind them. They knew that he could help cover mistakes and make saves.
“I thought he was extremely professional in his approach on and off the field,” Harrington went on. “Not only is he a great player, but he is an even better person and teammate. Humberto has a great future ahead of him, and I feel blessed to have been able to coach him. He worked hard every single day and never once complained.”
Pelaez has served as the starting keeper for MC over the past two seasons, posting a 1.52 goals against average with 144 saves over 14 victories.
“Humberto is obviously a very talented keeper, and I’m glad he chose to spend his summer continuing to get better,” said head coach Kevin Johns. “The NPSL is a very competitive league that will better prepare him as we head into our first full season of competition in the GSC.”
