The Simpson County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after what are believed to be human skeletal remains were discovered Sunday evening in the Martinville community.
According to investigators, deputies responded to a residence on Highway 541 North shortly after 7:30 p.m. on August 9. The homeowners reported that two of their dogs had returned from a wooded area south of the property carrying what appeared to be two large human leg bones.
Because of the thick vegetation and fading daylight, deputies secured the area Sunday night and returned the following morning to conduct a more extensive search.
On Monday, investigators were assisted by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) Crime Scene Unit, an anthropological team from Mississippi State University, and specially trained cadaver K-9 teams as they searched the area.
The recovered remains have been transported to the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office, where forensic experts will work to determine the identity of the individual and the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional information has been released at this time.
