Howard Johnnie Bowen, 95, of Raleigh, Mississippi, died Wednesday, January 8, 2020, at his home. He was born Sunday, September 21, 1924.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2020 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Magee, Mississippi.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday, January 12, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Magee. The burial will follow in Merchant Cemetery, Raleigh, MS. Bro. James Ray Easterling and Bro. Bryan Beech will officiate. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee is in charge of arrangements. (601) 849-5031
He left home at the age of 14 and sharecropped for a few years. Around the age of 16, he was in the Civilian Conservation Camp. At around the age of 17 he took welding certification training which would serve him for most of the remainder of his life. He worked in several industries at companies such as Ingalls Shipyard, MRS (Mississippi Road Supply), Howell Steel Corp., and Delta Steel Corp. In his later years, Howard was primarily self-employed. In 2003 Dad and Abigail went to Alaska and boarded the USS Explorer, he learned this was the Brasil, a ship he helped build in the late 1950’s.
He was preceded in death by his wife Eunice Bowen; parents, Abe and Lou Ainsworth Bowen; one daughter, Mattie Jean Bowen Crisler; seven brothers, Pat Bowen, Truman Bowen, Jackson Perry “Pog” Bowen, Benton Bowen, Delton Bowen, Clyde Bowen, and Clay Bowen; three sisters, Verdie Bowen, Ruthie Bowen Easterling, Louise Bowen Windham; one grandchild; one great-grandchild.
Survivors include three daughters, Ruth Hayes and husband George, of Taylorsville, Abigail Crosby and her husband Samuel, of Hattiesburg, and Mary Alice Nanney of Colorado; five sons, Tim Bowen and wife Melinda, of Raleigh, Eddie Bowen and wife Sherrie, of Raleigh, Carlie Bowen and wife Charolette, of Raleigh, David Bowen and wife Lana, of Brandon, Johnathan Bowen and wife Miriam, of Lena; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Michael Shad Thornton, Robert Lewis Bowen, John Earl Bowen, Carlie (Bobo) Bowen II, John David Bowen, and Jason Bowen. Honorary pallbearers will be Joseph (JJ) Crisler and Ernie Powell.
Family would like to thank everyone who helped make dad’s wish to stay home possible. A special thanks to Teresa Bowen, for caring for Dad for so long; Clark Bowen, for being so understanding and kind to Dad during his last months; and a special thanks to John Earl Bowen for checking on Dad so frequently over the past few years.
