Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael Guest (MS-03) and 106 other Republicans wrote a letter to the American people promising not to vote for any legislation that would lead to raising the debt limit.

“We, the undersigned Republican Representatives, are letting Democrat Representatives and the American public know that we will not vote to increase the debt ceiling, whether that increase comes through a standalone bill, a continuing resolution, or any other vehicle. This is a problem created by Democrat spending. Democrats will have to accept sole responsibility for facilitating it,” the Members write.

In their letter, the Members blame the need for an increase in the debt ceiling on the spending spree that Democrats have undertaken since assuming control of the White House and Congress, including the $1.9 trillion “COVID relief” bill that was approved without Republican support in March of this year. The bill was passed even though $1 trillion of COVID relief funds from previous bills had yet to be spent.

The Republican authors also point to the $3.5 trillion Budget Resolution as a major contributor for the precarious financial situation the nation now faces, which could lead to a default on debts.

“We should not default on our debts under any circumstances,” the Republican authors write. “If Democrats threaten a default, it will only be because they refuse to vote for the debt ceiling increase necessitated by their own irresponsible spending.”

Congressman Guest voted against the $3.5 trillion Budget Resolution, stating in a press release, “The American people do not deserve the deficit, debt, and waste that this resolution proposes.”

Congressman Guest also voted against the $1.9 trillion “COVID relief” bill, stating in a press release and on social media, “There is still $1 trillion in COVID relief funding that has yet to be spent. We need to be good stewards of the American people’s money instead of pushing through legislation that overshoots the gap of what’s needed to respond to the pandemic.”
