My first cousin, John Everett, died late Friday night, May 25th. He grew up next door to me and lived the last years of his life across the street from me. John has always been a presence in my life.

John was smart, creative, driven. He worked tirelessly for his son Huston to experience all that life had to offer. He worked side by side with his daddy in their business (Magee Auto Supply/NAPA) and in the fire department.

What happened? What caused John to loose vision of life with family…simply put…addictions. As Huston said, his daddy didn’t just have an addiction to drugs, he had many addictions. How do we keep our loved ones from choosing the path to destruction?

Memorial Day – A Time of Remembrance and Reflection

I wish I had the answers. No one is immune to addictions wrecking their families. Many people deal with these type issues. But, it always comes down to choices. We can’t make every choice for our children. We must as Christians do the best we can do in laying a firm foundation for our family.

I am glad of one choice John Everett made as a child…he accepted Jesus Christ into his heart as a young person. I believe once saved always saved. God does not leave us…we leave Him. Thank you Jesus that I have the peace in my heart that Johnny was saved years ago…that his mother and daddy led him to Christ. That he will see his mother and daddy again and be joined in the family of Christ.

I have a new appreciation for teachers in our young children departments. These committed Christians often lay the foundation that never leaves that person. There is no point in life where we cannot make a difference. No one is too old or too young to accept Jesus. Let us be mindful every day of the people we come in contact.

John’s daemons have been crushed and he has been set free.

Sue, your words were so true. I have no question where my brother is now I just wish I could have helped him stay longer here with us.
