“Alderman Matthew Dale Hickman, Alderman Angel McPhail Brister, and Alderman Whitney Barnes Baker have worked together this morning and would like to thank the Magee Cooperative AAL for donating 6 heat lamps that are now en route to the pound. We will do whatever we can, within the scope of our resources to care for the animals who find their way to the City Pound. The pound was never intended to be an animal shelter, nor was it intended to be a long term stay facility for these dogs. It was initially created to house animals that belonged to residents of the city when they got out and were in violation of the leash ordinance. However, as times have changed we find more and more that people are crossing over into the city and leaving these animals. This is a growing issue in all municipalities across the state and we continue to try to work with both private and state organizations to find solutions. We welcome any donations to the pound, but we cannot accept hay because it does cause drainage issues and many times beds and blankets have to be disposed of after one animal uses them to prevent the spread of disease within the facility. Again, we are doing as much as we can to try and ensure these animals are cared for and will continue to work on the issues we face as a result of the increasing number of strays in the area.”
