Funeral services will be held at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home Magee, MS on Tuesday, December 15, visitation at 12:30pm and service in the Colonial Funeral Home chapel at 2pm with internment in the Magee Cemetery. Her nephew, the Rev. Malcolm Byrd, will officiate.
Hazel was born September 26, 1929 in Sumrall, MS and grew up there. She met and married her late husband, Julius D. Speed of Seminary, MS, and they made Magee, MS their home for more than 60 years. Julius worked at McCarley Furniture for many years and was affectionately known as “Speed.” Hazel and Julius were married for nearly 48 years before he passed away in 1995. For the past five years, Hazel has been a resident of Golden Living Center in Tylertown to be near her son, Keith, and daughter-in-law, Betsy.
Hazel was a member of the First Baptist Church in Magee and a member of the Frances Kees Sunday School Group. Hazel also enjoyed playing bridge and was a founding member of the Magee Bridge Club.
Hazel had many friends in Magee and at Golden Living Center. She cherished those friendships. Often times many of her friends in Magee would drop by her home to have afternoon coffee with her. One of her dear friends said of her, “You could always drop by Hazel’s house for a cup of coffee without calling ahead. She always welcomed you in her home.” Hazel was also known for her great cooking, and during the holidays for her famous pecan pralines.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Julius D. Speed, and mother, Minnie Davis. Hazel is survived by her children, Dr. Keith Speed and Betsy Speed of Tylertown, MS, Steve Speed of Millard, MS, Karen Speed and Laurie Morrison of The Woodlands, TX, Donna Speed of Brandon, MS, sister-in-law Hazel Byrd of Jackson, MS and brother-in-law Erickson Speed of Jackson, MS. She has five grandchildren, Jamie and BJ Morrison of Oak Grove, MS, Jeff and Clair Speed of Oak Grove, MS; Elizabeth and Blaine Sistrunk of Pearl, MS; Scott and Madeline Speed of Sumrall, MS; and Ashley Speed of Brandon, MS. Hazel has seven great-grandchildren in whom she has delighted and taken great pride. She was the last survivor of her five siblings, Edward Davis of San Antonio, TX; Mary Krueger of Oshkosh, WI; Helen Lawson of Mayodan, N.C.; Jack Davis of Mobile, AL and Bill Conrad Davis of Pensacola, FL. She is survived by many cherished nieces and nephews.
