Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at approximately 3:00 PM, a grass fire occurred on highway 49 south near New Hope Road and Sharon Saratoga Road which quickly became a full scale fire.  Magee Volunteer Fire Department was first to arrive on scene.  Other fires in the county prevented area departments from assisting immediately but did arrive later.  The Forestry Commission sent equipment and drivers for fighting the fire.

The cause of the fire appears a delivery truck having mechanical problems pulled off 49 into a grassy area causing the side of the highway to catch fire.  Smoke covered the highway for several hours. The Mississippi Highway Patrol made the call not to close the highway.

The fire spread quickly jumping to the median.
