Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at approximately 3:00 PM, a grass fire occurred on highway 49 south near New Hope Road and Sharon Saratoga Road which quickly became a full scale fire. Magee Volunteer Fire Department was first to arrive on scene. Other fires in the county prevented area departments from assisting immediately but did arrive later. The Forestry Commission sent equipment and drivers for fighting the fire.
The cause of the fire appears a delivery truck having mechanical problems pulled off 49 into a grassy area causing the side of the highway to catch fire. Smoke covered the highway for several hours. The Mississippi Highway Patrol made the call not to close the highway.
The fire spread quickly jumping to the median.
Three structures were endangered from the fire. All three structures were saved. The fire departments battled the fire for several hours.
After 6:00 o’clock, Magee Fire Department was called again. During this period, one fire fighter was injured.
The Magee Fire Department was called again Thursday morning around 10 o’clock for reported fire in the area.
This is an ongoing fire. Information will be posted when available.
(The Magee Fire Truck has arrived back at the station. Fire is controlled)
