Jackson, MS. Treasurer Lynn Fitch joined Governor Phil Bryant today as he signed a proclamation naming September 2016 College Savings Month.

“I appreciate Governor Bryant’s support as we join in the national celebration to support College Savings Month,” said Treasurer Fitch. “More and more Mississippi students are seeking higher education, which is a great trend to encourage.  But, we need to find ways to lessen the financial load once they graduate.

“Currently, 60% of Mississippi graduates carry student loan debt and the average debt is over $27,000. This isn’t the way we want our kids to start off in the world as adults,” Treasurer Fitch said. “Families can help by saving early for their children and grandchildren. College Savings Mississippi offers two state-sponsored 529 plans, the Mississippi Affordable College Savings (MACS) plan and the Mississippi Prepaid Affordable College Tuition (MPACT) plan, both with state and federal tax advantages.  For as little as $15 a paycheck, you can set your children on the road to a better future – more education, less debt.”
