The Power of a Hug
Many of you know Michael Dunn, the son of Donna and David Dunn and a fixture at Zips and the Sportsplex, he is a very special friend of mine. We have been friends for thirty-two years. Michael’s brother Chris played baseball with Larkin and Breck since age 4…so, we “grew up” with Michael as a part of our life.
Late Wednesday afternoon, I attend the ceremony recognizing the winners of the Peoples Bank Christmas Card Contest (wow! Great designs by these young people!). I was sitting in a chair and looked toward the door and there was Michael, Donna, David and Chris and Morgan’s children. When Michael saw me he started signaling for me to come where he was. Michael doesn’t “talk” with his mouth…he uses his hands. I immediately went to Michael and he had to show me what I was wearing…shake hands with Donna and then instructed me as always to shake hands with David. I went back to my chair and in a minute Michael came and sat down by me. I was talking to him and we were “discussing” what was going on and who was there. When I finally stopped talking (believe that)…things were quite for a minute or so. Michael reached out and threw his arm around my neck and hugged me in a way he had never hugged me before. He kept patting and “loving” on me. Ya’ll, the tears literally sprang into my eyes…because he had never hugged me like that before. His hug touched me all the way to my heart…what a wonderful feeling to feel truly loved. I feel as if I’ve had my Christmas hug! Sometimes, we underestimate the power of a hug. Sadness I was feeling melted away…the spirit of love and living crept through my body. Michael always teaches me something…the power of a hug. I hope today you will hug someone. Let them know you care…let them know you matter…wrapping your arms around a friend, a family member…someone you just appreciate might be the best gift given during the Christmas season.
It’s time for the Christmas parade!!! Thursday night at 6 o’clock on Main Street the tradition continues. I have no idea how long Magee has hosted a Christmas parade…but at least all my life (and that is a long time!). Bundle up…it’s gonna be cold. The MageeNews.com golf cart will be rolling (if we find a generator!)…and the “mooie looie” truck will make an appearance.
Speaking of Mooie Looie, don’t forget the contest has begun…send pictures and info of any deer killed in Mississippi. There are two divisions 16 and under; and 17 and older. The biggest buck wins a rifle!!! I love my hunters and enjoy giving recognition to a sport that is huge in our state.
The Christmas Store, sponsored by the youth of the First Baptist Church, is in need of toys and food. According to one of the store workers…the food is “short.” Canned goods, paper products, non-perishable items may be left at the Family Life Center through Friday night. The Shop serves between 1,000-1,600 people. Be a part of this blessed Christmas ministry!
It’s give away time again!!! Two free tickets to the Christmas Tour of Homes can be yours…if you are one of the two “first” people to comment on this article! The Christmas Tour of Homes is Sunday, December 6th featuring the homes of Lee and Beth Moore, Danny Moseley, and Bill and Linda Bennett. The time is 2-4 and the $10 tickets are available at Simpson Medical Supply and Sue @ MageeNews.com. Tickets will be sold at the houses on the day of the tour.
Open House at Blackledge Face Center in Jackson. Visiting Blackledge is a great opportunity for you to learn about the “wonders” of cosmetic procedures. The Open House is from 9-4…and they’s got great deals on products!
Prayers for the people of San Bernardino, CA. The latest information I have: San Bernardino, Calif. Police Chief Jarrod Burguan confirms the identity of two suspects in Wednesday’s shooting at an office building as 28-year-old Syed Rizwan Farook, a San Bernardino County employee, and 27-year-old Tashfeen Malik. Burguan says authorities are “pretty comfortable” Farook and Malik, who were killed in a shootout with police Wednesday afternoon, were the only two shooters in the attack and said investigators have not ruled out terrorism.
Pray for the families …pray for the people who experienced this act of war…and the children…my heart is saddened and scared…our world continues to change in ways I never thought possible.
Special prayers for Joyce Walker. Joyce is 100% on a ventilator and the doctors have been unable to get her off the vent. Her sweet family needs your prayers…this is not an easy road to walk.
Tommy Everett continues to improve and may come home next week. He is in room 146 at MGH Swing bed.
I hope to see you at the Christmas parade…
Have a great day…and don’t’ forget to hug someone!

Hugs are magical! That is one thing about being a school teacher, you get and give lots of hugs wherever you go.

Unconditional love personified! What an awesome Christmas gift!
The love of a hug!!! Priceless .
Michael has been a constant source of inspiration for me since the day he was born. I can’t tell you how wonderful it has been to have him at our family’s functions for all these years. My Aunt Louise and cousin Donna have amazed me for all of these years. I stand in awe of that entire family. Just reading this article brought tears of joy to my eyes. Thanks Sue for this article. It truly expresses Michael’s true spirit and how blessed we are to have him in our family. Happy holidays to all!!
