Glenn Dale Purvis passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025, in Ridgeland, MS, at the age of 94, with family by his side. He was born on April 30, 1930, in Magee, MS, to the parents of Willis and Cora Purvis and raised on the family farm on Dry Creek Road. He was a native of Magee, MS and raised his family in Picayune, MS.
Glenn graduated in 1950 from Magee High School and attended Copiah-Lincoln Junior College in Wesson and Jones Junior College in Ellisville. He then graduated in 1955 from Mississippi State University with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Economics and with a minor in Forestry.
Glenn worked for the Mississippi Forestry Commission as area forester, USDA Soil Conservation as farm planner, General Electric/PanAm as landscape & grounds manager at Stennis Space Center, Harris Texaco Oil Distributor in Picayune, MS and then transitioned his career as a life and health insurance agent for New York Life Insurance Company and later Blue Cross Blue Shield of MS.
Glenn was baptized and joined the Methodist Church and was a member in Magee, Leakesville, Picayune and Collins.
Glenn, called “Papa” by his family, was happiest when he was surrounded by family, especially his grandchildren. He would drive for miles to see them as they were growing up. He also enjoyed watching the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
Glenn is survived by his children, Dale Purvis (Tammy) of Hattiesburg, Lee Purvis (Lisa) of Flowood, Stan Purvis (Jill) of Ridgeland and Anna Purvis Mills (Carter) of Daphne, AL; grandchildren, Kayla Purvis Weathers (Ross) and Karlyn Purvis, Megan Purvis, Taylor Purvis (Lana) and Lee Purvis Jr (Tori), William Purvis, David Purvis and Andrew Purvis, Emma Mills and Abby Mills, Ashley Moon Wood (Matt) and Lindsey Moon Friel (Chris); great-grandchildren, Easton Weathers, Lane Weathers, Parker Purvis, Morgan Purvis, Mallory Purvis, Miles Mills, Reese Wood, Rivers Wood, Lillee Strickland, and Laney Friel and the mother of his children, Carolyn Harris Purvis of Picayune, MS.
Glenn was predeceased by his father, Willis Jefferson Purvis; mother, Cora Jane Rankin Purvis; brothers, Rev. Willis Norman Purvis (Avis) and John L Purvis; sisters, Annie Rea Purvis Womack (Cordis), Vernell Purvis Jones (Amzie), Katie Ruth Purvis Barnes (Troy), Jean Purvis Barnard (Wardell) and June Purvis Whitley.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Tutor Funeral Home in Magee, MS at 1:30 PM with visitation from 12:00 PM until 1:30 PM. Interment will follow in Sharon Cemetery, with Rev. Brad Mercier officiating.
Special thanks to his caregivers Amber, Juanita, Kathy and Crystal with Sitters, LLC for their kindness and dedication while caring for our Dad.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Glenn’s memory to Samaritan’s Purse.
Arrangements are entrusted to Tutor Funeral Home of Magee.
