Gladys Ellen Matthews Johns went to be with the Lord on May 15, 2024. She was born on August 8, 1947, in Magnolia, Mississippi, the daughter of Tannie and Gladys Matthews.
She was united in marriage to Willie Johns on February 12, 1966, in McComb, MS. She enjoyed cooking, camping, and spending time with family, especially with her grandkids. Ellen was a strong volunteer in the ministry of her church in areas like G.A.’s, and AWANA, cooking for the sick and working with families with Mississippi Baptist Disaster Relief. She worked as a clerk in the Simpson County Circuit Clerk’s Office for many years. She had a love for her family, friends, and her Savior Jesus Christ.
She is preceded in death by her parents; Tannie and Gladys Matthews; brothers, Benard Matthews and Willis Matthews; sisters, Doris Adams, Evelyn Hodges, and Lynn Wells.
Ellen is survived by her husband, Willie Johns; two children, Brad Johns (Jana), of Mendenhall, MS, and Chris Johns (Traci), of Hollandale, MS; brothers, Richard B. Matthews (Georgie) of Fayetteville, NC and Ronnie Matthews (Judy) of Lexington, SC; granddaughters, Haley (Doug) Sherrill, Caleb Johns, Hannah Johns, Cadee Johns, Hayden Johns, Josh Johns, Justin Johns, and Lizzy Johns and great-granddaughter, Ellie Sherrill.
Thank you to all the Accent Care Home Health and Hospice workers who took such good care of Ellen while she was sick, and a special “Thank You” to Lamisha Hubbard who helped Willie care for her daily.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 17, 2024, at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, in Mendenhall, MS from 5:00-8:00 p.m. followed by the funeral on Saturday, May 18, 2024, also at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, in Mendenhall, MS at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Poplar Springs Cemetery. Bro. Chuck Morgan, Bro. Chris Johns and Bro. Ken West will officiate the service.
